How Do Data Centers Connect to the Internet?

Network systems are responsible for computing tasks, as well as processing and storing data. Thus, they are found anywhere – in banks, stores, medical institutions, etc. To ensure secure and reliable storage of servers and accompanying devices, specialized constructions are used. Wall-mount racks are the most popular option for public areas.
Wall-mount rack cabinets are assembled with or without side panels. However, solid bodies are more popular. These are compact boxes that are hung to vertical surfaces with special fasteners. The model catalog ranges from 4U up to 15U products.
Why is it recommended to use specialized cabinets for equipment accommodation? Placing hardware in this type of furniture gives the following positive effects:
1. Floor space ergonomics. Hanging furniture to walls allows for leaving floor space for other purposes and improving room ergonomics. Such solutions are ideal for small premises and offices.
2. Reliable storage. Durable metal bodies provide support for IT equipment. Posts are designed to carry servers and accessories. If its weight capacity is not violated, racks can hold dozens of components for a long time.
3. Hardware protection. Being isolated from an external environment, devices are protected from all sorts of negative impacts, including human and environmental factors. Equipment cannot be damaged intentionally or accidentally.
4. Dust accumulation. Solid bodies protect hardware from dust settling. Debris and other pollutants cannot enter the rack body and pill inside PCs. Thus, equipment is prevented from overheating due to dust settlement.
5. Optimal inner environment control. Slots for ventilation and fans are designed. Unused slots are plugged into blanking panels to maintain optimal operating conditions. Perforation is used for airflow circulation. These means allow for creating the required temperature inside cabinets.
6. Effective cable routing. Hung models also have slots for wiring cords to ensure system powering and communication. You can also add some cable management units to ensure effective spacing within a rack.
Wall-mount racks are reliable bodies that have all the needed tools for equipment fastening and secure carrying.
Server racks can be attached to any type of surface. Concrete and bricks are more durable materials, while drywall is less reliable.
Note that the wall material will influence the carrying capacity. For example, if technicians locate racks on drywall, they will have to sacrifice weight. One should know that the smallest-hung cabinet (4U model) can support just 105 lbs when fastened to drywall, while its carrying capacity is increased to 200 lbs on other surfaces.
Hung cabinets can carry up to 800 lbs. Special fasteners are required to attach such constructions to surfaces. These are:
1. Studs. If racks are wider than 16 inches, then technicians mount them using two studs. This option allows for accommodating devices in 15u racks.
2. Drywall anchors are large threads that have locks on their sides to reliably fasten racks to surfaces and carry them durably.
Note that each stud or anchor has a different weight capacity. In most cases, bodies are equipped with suitable fasteners. In this case, the task is easier since producers know the weight capacity and equip bodies with matching fasteners. If your kit does not include dowels, you should contact experienced technicians to choose the proper fasteners and calculate the load correctly.
Finally, when fasteners are selected, let’s make a wall-mount rack installation guide to ensure secure fastening and serviceability.
1. First of all, decide on the type of mounting. Technicians distinguish between horizontal and vertical attaching methods. The first mounting option is suitable for devices that are no more than 17.7” wide. The second method is applied if IT equipment is wider than 17.7”.
2. Use chassis for horizontal accommodating and shelves for vertical placement.
3. Use brackets to install them. Vertical uprights have multiple installation holes so choose the required height, depending on the equipment to be placed. Install rails or shelves.
4. Apply shoulder screws to attach an inner rail to a server.
5. Match rails to slide computers into the cabinet.
6. If you use a compatible server, mount a thumb screw.
Server fastening takes a few minutes. However, recheck all fasteners to make sure that hardware is reliably mounted.
Although wall-hanging models are small in size, they are perfect for compact network systems. They are widely used in public spaces, such as stores, shopping centers, banks, etc. This option is an excellent solution for home offices. The main thing is to select proper fasteners and not exceed the allowed weight capacity to ensure durable and secure service life.
