FAQ

How do I cool my server rack?

Keep your server rack cold by managing airflow effectively. Use blanking panels to cover empty spaces, arrange cables to keep airflow clear, use hot/cold aisle containment strategies, and employ cooling solutions like fans, vents, liquid cooling, or heat exchangers for the best thermal management.

Why do server racks need cooling?

Server racks need tha to prevent overheating and maintain stable performance. High server densities produce heat that can damage hardware and cause downtime. It's vital to use proper cooling methods and ventilation to keep temperatures safe.

What is the difference between in row and in rack cooling?

In-row solutions position units between racks to cool nearby ones efficiently. In contrast, in-rack cooling integrates mechanisms directly within each rack. In-row options offer flexibility for larger setups, while in-rack focuses on cooling individual racks separately.

What are in-rack cooling solutions?

It is a method used in data centers to control the temperature of IT equipment right at the rack level. It stops overheating by blowing cold air to the front and pushing hot air out from the back of racks. Techniques include air and liquid cooling, rear door heat exchangers.

Server Rack Cooling: Why is it Important?

Effective cooling for server rack enclosures is crucial to prevent heat buildup. Many businesses and data centers use AC units to cool them, but this can hike up electricity bills and isn’t an ideal solution for enclosed setups.

Excessive heat can harm your valuable equipment, making them age faster and leading to system failures and unpredictable performance. If left unchecked, the accumulated heat might even pose a fire risk within the cabinet.

Server cabinet cooling systems are the most reliable and cost-effective method to protect the integrity of your devices – no matter where they reside within the rack.

What Do You Need for a Server Cabinet Cooling System

Consider these variables when developing a server cabinet cooling solution:

  • How many servers, UPS, and other devices are stored in your cabinet, and how much heat do they generate.
  • The cabinet’s built in terms of perforation availability, shelf size, and space utilization.
  • The inherent ability of the cabinet to handle ventilation.
  • Cabinet position within the room.
  • How the devices are arranged within the enclosed server rack.

Once you have a good idea about your cooling requirements, here are some equipment you can use to maintain temperature:

Temperature control panel with fans: This device protects the interior of the server cabinet from developing hot spots. These occur when the heat gets trapped behind servers or other large equipment, resulting in performance issues and shortened lifespan of the rack-mounted equipment. The control panel can be mounted on top or bottom shelf or near the most heat-generating equipment. When the temperature exceeds a pre-set threshold, it will auto-activate the fans and provide your mission-critical equipment with cool air. The standard model comes with 2 fans, but for stronger airflow, we also have a 4-fan version available.

Shelf Fan Trays: These can be placed below specific equipment for spot cooling or at the bottom of a rack to push warm air upwards and out of the rack. There is a readily available on/off switch you can use to control the fan. Sysracks carries trays with 4 and 6 high-performance fans. To maximize airflow further, you can install an array of fan trays depending on how many heat-generating units are present in your cabinet.

Wall Mount Roof Fan Kit: This is a computer server rack cooling system unit ideal for facilitating ventilation in a wall-mounted enclosure cabinet. They can be installed either inside or outside the cabinet. It comes with a cord that can be plugged into any standard outlet or a PDU within the rack.
