Key Components of a Network Server Rack: What to Put in for Efficient Data Management? photo

Network systems come as the “hearts” and “brains” of modern businesses and enterprises. Their capacities and computing abilities are used in any task. Thus, to generate large volumes of datum, store information, and cope with processing tasks, such systems comprise hundreds of components. Brains consist of servers, PCs, switchers, and other active and passive hardware. Such systems can take hectares of area. How and where to store them?

Specialized racks come to the rescue. These are multi-level constructions used for IT hardware housing and effective space allocation. Manufacturers use durable metal for server rack production to guarantee a long service life and security. Constructions are equipped with tech holes and are ready for use.

Reasons for IT Equipment Accommodation in Racks

This type of furniture is the best choice for network rack components accommodation since its construction is designed for this purpose. The following advantages are guaranteed:

  1. 100% security. Metal bodies protect hardware from damage, pollution, and access. Reliable fastening to rails and shelves guarantees security and provides long-term storage conditions.
  2. Cooling. IT equipment emits much heat during functioning, which leads to overheating if appropriate cooling strategies are not integrated. Server rack bodies are perforated and have special tech slots for cooling units mounting to force the airflow to circulate in the right direction.
  3. Easy troubleshooting. Removable side panels, sliding shelves, and adjustable rails create perfect conditions for comfortable maintenance and quick access to all functional units.
  4. Efficient space allocation. Multi-tier rack constructions allow for housing hundreds of equipment pieces in a relatively small area.

Thus, the benefit of using server racks is obvious. Moreover, furniture models are ergonomic and compact to fit any room, regardless of its size.

Key Components of Server Furniture

When considering furniture construction, each model consists of two essential components of a server rack, namely, the main frame and mounting rails. The main frame can comprise two or four vertical uprights to which all other equipment, panels, and accessories are attached. Mounting rails are designed for holding shelves with hardware. Mounting rails are also attached to the frame with the help of front brackets.

To make cabinets steadier and prevent equipment from accidental falling and damage, it is important to allocate hardware in rack correctly. That is, heavy servers are placed in the bottom part and fastened from four sides, while lightweight hardware is mounted on top.

Note that two types of furniture are distinguished according to mounting possibilities. These are floor-standing and wall-hung cabinets. When considering the difference in bodies, note that the first group of models are more spacious and allow for accommodating mode devices. The latter is more compact due to its limited capacity for carrying weight, which is why it is ideal for small systems.

Other important parts of a server rack include:

  • a front door (closed type, open type) is a lockable door made of heat-resistant glass (transparent models) or metal with perforation.
  • a rear door is another door with latches used for access to the equipment from the rear side. In most cases, it is used for maintenance and examining connectors, switches, cables, and other accessories.
  • side panels are walls for racks. They are made of metal; perforation is made to ensure air circulation.
  • the top panel is the “ceiling” of the cabinet. It is mainly aimed to protect hardware from pollution, debris settlement, and other environmental influences.
  • a base is a bottom part of the rack that allows for assembling all these above-mentioned network cabinet components in one furniture piece. It is frequently equipped with legs or casters for easier relocation to improve portability.

According to the type of body, racks can be enclosed or open-framed. Thus, it means that not all furniture has walls, doors, and top/bottom panels. In most models, they are removable.

Additional Equipment for System Setup

Have you wondered “what to put in a server rack?” The number of parts in server cabinets can reach several hundred, depending on the serving facility. Here’s a list of obligatory parts that each network system has:

  1. Servers. It is the heart of each IT system. It is the main functioning organ of the entire unit. No system can perform without it. Although servers can be placed on desktops or installed next to serving computers, racks remain the best place for their accommodation. Furniture secures equipment from damage and provides sufficient cooling.
  2. Switches & Routers. These devices are used to set up communication between functioning units and hardware. Switches have multiple slots for connecting equipment and are designed to redirect data to specific devices. Routers are responsible for data transfers between several networks. Thus, they are active in a bigger area and allow for interconnecting devices within a facility or several ones.
  3. Patch panels. These accessories are used to route cables to their destinations. These tools have multiple slots through which dozens of cords are wired. Such accessories are most popular for installation in open-frame models with free access to slots from both sides.
  4. Supporting equipment. Other key components of rack server include accessories that allow the system to function properly, smoothly, and healthy, avoiding downtime, failure, or overheating. These include:
  • blanking panels are plastic or metal pieces used to plug in unused slots in server rack constructions, through which air and debris can penetrate the enclosure.
  • rails are installed to support devices and allow hardware to easily slide in and out of the cabinet body, which simplifies maintenance.
  • cords are routed to power hardware and ensure uninterruptible feeding and communication between components.
  • cable management accessories (ties, arms, hooks, organizers, labels) help keep hundreds of cords arranged and prevent tangling.

These are basic components found in cabinets. Yet, much more devices can be placed as well. These include computers/laptops, monitors for troubleshooting, a keyboard, a mouse, and other managing equipment. These devices help control, set up, and test the system, as well as eliminate errors, on-site. Fans are mounted to direct the airflow and guarantee sufficient cooling.

Server furniture is a safe place to accommodate vulnerable IT hardware. Their constructions are developed, taking into consideration the features and needs of a system administration sector. For example, slots for cable routing and fan mounting are provided. Metal bodies are durable and resistant to shocks and environmental impacts. Multi-tier structures allow for placing many components. Thus, the benefit of server furniture use is evident. Moreover, it is possible to pick a model for any premise and some server rack accessories to make the storage of the equipment even more effective.
